Writing Meditation Circle

“Writing is drawing the essence of what we know out of the shadows.” I’ve never met a truer quote than this one by Karl Ove Knaussgard.

Writing, for me, has always been this experience.

As a little girl, I wrote the stories that needed a page to call home. These little worlds I created with a pencil were my creative expression and a grounding point.

As a college student, writing became both an analytical and journalistic practice in exploring external truths and putting them on display for others to interact with.

Adulthood also brought me into writing a brand’s essence as a job, along with many, many more exploratory places.

In this current career realm, writing has been an instrumental tool for self-reflection and healing work in the Truth Be Told Mindful Writing Series I offered for a while.

Lately, writing is pushing me into another form. Stories that want to be told are swirling around in my field with an intensity. When I ignore them, they get louder and louder. It’s as if they’re saying, it’s time to commit.

I suspect many others feel this, too.

In her book on creativity, Elizabeth Gilbert recognized that an idea has a spirit. This living essence––it will knock on your door, and if you don’t answer the call, it’ll find someone else who will. Someone else will write the story that was meant, at one time, to be yours.

If this resonates, and you’d like to tap into the essence of the story that’s calling you, but want accountability, inspiration, or the invitation, join me Tuesdays from 4-6pm in East Grand Rapids beginning May 14 through June 18.

Whatever you’re writing is welcome––a journal, a novel, a memoir, song lyrics, a poem, or a desire to cultivate an embodied writing practice that helps you explore your shadow parts.

We’ll begin with a short practice to help you clear out the clutter and tune in to your story and felt sense. Then, you’re welcome to write anywhere you’d like on the property: by the pool, the pond, the trees, or on the purple couch. If you get stuck in your process, take a walk in the crystal labyrinth, draw a card, or ask me for guidance.
